Salmon Restoration

Both the Save Our Wild Salmon Coalition and the Columbia River Alliance say they want to restore salmon in the Columbia River Basin. But they disagree on how to do that. Here’s a look at the two organizations.

COLUMBIA RIVER ALLIANCE

Ideas for saving wild salmon:

The alliance’s plan calls for barging all young salmon around the dams and releasing them farther down river; reducing by half the predatory fish in Lower Granite Reservoir; reducing the amount of Snake River water used to flush fish downstream; improving hatchery practices to protect wild stocks; protecting spawning habitat with better land management; eliminating all U.S. commercial fishing of endangered stocks; improving fishing techniques so wild fish can be safely released; and more.

1995 budget: $300,000 for office and administration; money for studies and special projects solicited separately from members.

Staff:2-3 full time

Headquarters: 825 NE Multnomah, Suite 956, Portland, OR 97232. Phone: 503-238-1540; fax 503-238-1554

SAVE OUR WILD SALMON COALITION
