Tourist Area Hit By Flash Floods

Compiled From Wire Services

Flash floods sent water rolling into timeshare condominiums and mobile homes Monday and closed three of the busiest trails in the Grand Canyon.

Nearly 2 inches of rain fell in some spots before the storm moved east.

Water from Oak Creek rose windshield-high on parked cars and damaged more than 20 homes in the upscale tourist towns of Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon, officials said.

About 200 people were advised to leave their homes.

At Grand Canyon National Park, flood damage forced officials to close the South Kaibab and Bright Angel trails, spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge said.

The trails are used daily by hundreds of hikers on their way from the main visitor center at the south rim down into the canyon.
