Fan Struck By Discus

Compiled From Wire Services

A spectator at a high school track and field meet was in critical condition in a San Antonio hospital after he was struck in the head by a flying discus.

Hector Aguirre, 38, of New Braunfels, was watching the field events at the Ranger Relays at Smithson Valley High School, about 10 miles northwest of New Braunfels, when the accident occurred Saturday.

He was sitting out of bounds, about 100 feet from the discus throwing circle, when he was struck, said Don Clark, spokesman for the Comal Independent School District.

He was airlifted to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, where he was in critical condition, a hospital spokesman said.

“It’s a tragic accident that was not anyone’s fault,” Clark said. “It happened under normal competition circumstances. The spectator was not where he should have been. It’s just an unfortunate thing.”
