Rock Slides Hit Grand Canyon

Rock slides caused by heavy rain wiped out trails and damaged the Grand Canyon’s main water pipeline, forcing hotel guests to eat off paper plates and cancel hiking trips.

Park Superintendent Robert L. Arnberger said Wednesday the national park wouldn’t close but its lodges will not take any reservations until the pipeline is repaired.

“The pipeline is one great engineering feat, and replacing it is going to take some trickery,” Arnberger said, adding that repairs could cost up to $1 million.
