First Lady Honors 108 Teachers

Hillary Rodham Clinton honored 108 math and science teachers Thursday for inventive teaching, which she said is important “to a well-rounded education for every child and equally critical to the future of our country.”

The first lady welcomed winners of the Presidential Awards for Science and Mathematics Teaching to an East Room ceremony.

She said she is among those who approach such a group with “a large dose of humility, since we are far from being math and science whizzes.”

Taking note of women scientists in the audience, Clinton said it is important that “adults, particularly teachers, believe that all children - including girls - can grow up to be scientists.”

The honorees were announced last fall and came to Washington as part of their reward.
