Wosc Assistant Bennett Elevated

Western Oregon State College has named Blaine Bennett football coach, replacing Randy Wegner, who resigned in January.

Bennett, 30, served as assistant coach the past three years under Wegner.

WOSC president Bill F. Cowart said a national search was conducted before the school decided Bennett was the best candidate.

“Coach Bennett will ensure the continued development of our football program, making it truly competitive in our league,” Cowart said.

Bennett’s experience includes NCAA Division I, I-AA, II and NAIA levels.

He was previously an assistant at California State University-Chico and the University of Idaho.

He also has worked extensively with the All-Northwest Football Camp that was started 22 years ago by his father, former Whitworth College coach Shorty Bennett.

UI athletics: University of Idaho associate athletic director Lance West is leaving the school to accept a position as associate vice president for institutional advancement at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va.

West, who played, coached and served as an administrator at Idaho since 1981, will be responsible for fund-raising for the athletic department and other developmentrelated areas.

West was an all-Big Sky offensive lineman for Idaho and graduated in 1985. He served as an assistant football coach in 1985 and 1986 and then became regional development for the athletic department in 1986.

He was named assistant athletic director in 1989 and was recently elevated to associate athletic director.

Women’s basketball: Tonight’s Big Sky Conference women’s basketball tourament opener between Eastern Washington and Montana will be broadcast on KSBN 1230 AM, starting at 6:40.

If Eastern wins, Saturday night’s championship game will also be carried by KSBN, starting at 5:45.
