WSU Women Forget Whipping, Look To Cal Stanford Depth Too Much For Cougars

Kevin Blocker Staff Writer

Instead of dwelling on too many of the gory details of the behind-the-shed whipping Stanford put on the Washington State women’s basketball team Thursday night, maybe it would be more soothing to look to the future.

Specifically, WSU’s 2 p.m. Saturday game against California at Bohler Gym.

The Cougars don’t have time to dwell on their 81-47 loss to Stanford in front of 1,235 at Bohler Gym. If WSU (8-9 Pac-10, 15-11) has any hope of earning an NCAA tournament bid, its thoughts must now be on the Golden Bears.

“We aren’t even concerned about that (an NCAA tournament bid),” WSU point guard Susie Jarosch said. “We don’t have control of the committee, and we don’t have control of how they select. We’re just dropping everything that happened tonight to get ready for Cal.”

Said WSU coach Harold Rhodes: “We went in to this week focusing on what we had to do on Monday and Tuesday, then Stanford Wednesday and Thursday and now we focus on Cal Friday and Saturday.”

Moving on to Friday and Saturday is the best alternative for WSU after what happened Thursday. The Cardinal (16-1, 25-2) showed why its the No. 5- ranked team in the country.

The list of things Stanford did versus what Washington State didn’t do was long, but no statistic was more disproportionate than rebounding. Stanford grabbed a season-high 54 rebounds to 32 for the Cougars. Of those 54 Cardinal rebounds, 24 were on the offensive end.

Attribute some of it to size and strength, but also attribute it to Stanford’s depth.

“Our depth is a humongous factor,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said.
