Best Things In Life Worth The Struggle

Dan Webster Staff Writer

In this era of marital dissolution, the message seems to be: If it’s hard, it isn’t working.

Maybe so, but here’s a thought: What in life worth having is easy? The problem isn’t the notion that marriage is hard but rather the popular belief that something hard is necessarily bad.

Maybe we should look at it this way: Anything worth having is worth struggling for. The flip side, of course, is that it’s helpful to recognize the difference between a struggle worth waging and a lost cause.

To hear about a marriage that has endured a variety of ups and downs over 35 years, plan to attend the April 19 program titled “Springtime - Time Out for Couples” sponsored by the Women’s Health Center. The program features a dialogue between moderator Jim Olson and longtime couple John and Gail Goeller.

The event, which will be held at the Health Education Center of Holy Family Hospital, 5633 N. Lidgerwood, is free and open to the public. For further information, call 482-2477.

Que pasa con la raza: Gender relations will be a major topic of the upcoming National Association for Chicano Studies annual conference, March 29-April 1 at the Ridpath Hotel.

“We’re going to look at how sexuality intersects with gender roles, how we view sexuality relative to social issues and, hopefully, in the process, dispel some myths,” says Carlos Maldonado, director of Eastern Washington University’s Chicano Studies Program.

The official title of the conference is “Expanding Raza World Views: Sexuality and Regionalism.” Some sessions will be open to the public. For more information, call 359-6335.

Exploring strange new worlds: Here is a verbatim transcription from a press release announcing the March 17-20 appearance in Spokane of one Jon Shore, a self-described spiritual teacher, empath, writer and musician from Santa Fe,

“I am an empath. That means that I can feel inside you everything that you are to the depths of your Soul. Every emotion, every strong belief, and most personality traits. I can feel all the beauty and Light of your Soul and its purpose. Whatever is limiting you, blocking you, hurting you or overwhelming you, I can feel that.” And so on.

Readings with Shore cost $65 an hour. That fee includes a taped recording of the session. For further information, call Robin Rigoli at 487-8605.
