O’Meara Victorious
Mark O’Meara managed to hold on to victory in the Honda Classic at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after blowing a six-shot lead.
On the brink of collapse, O’Meara regained control of himself and repulsed the late bids by Ian Woosnam and Nick Faldo.
O’Meara registered a wind-blown par71 to produce his first victory since 1992 with a 9-under 275 total.
Faldo was second alone after a 69 and a 276 total. Woosnam was another stroke back at 277 after a last-round 68 that included four birdies and an eagle.
O’Meara’s ninth career victory - four of the others came at Pebble Beach - was worth $216,000 from the total purse of $1.2 million and pushed his season’s earnings to $316,336.
Andrew Magee was fourth alone at 67-279 and was followed by Blaine McCallister at 71-280.
Nick Price, the Zimbabwean who won this title a year ago and has dominated world golf for the past two years, had a 74 and finished his first American start of the season at par-284.
Jim Albus pocketed $97,500 for winning his second straight Dominion Seniors tournament at San Antonio. Albus finished 11-under-par at 205 on the 6,814-yard Dominion course, beating Jay Sigel and Ray Floyd by three shots.
At Tucson, Ariz., Dottie Mochrie built a five-stroke lead with three birdies in four holes on the back nine and won the Ping-Welch’s Championship by five strokes. She closed with a bogey-free round of 4-under-par 68 that left her at 10-under 278.
