U.S. Takes Control

Compiled From Wire Services

Allen Johnson confirmed his status as one of the world’s best hurdlers. Distance runner Regina Jacobs confirmed that she has beaten an iron deficiency problem.

The two led a U.S. resurgence at the World Indoor Championships. Americans won four gold medals after going winless the first two days.

The relatively inexperienced Johnson, 24, performed like a veteran, winning the 60-meter hurdles at 7.39 seconds, a championship record.

The veteran Jacobs, 31, running with the sprightliness of a youngster, became the first American - male or female - to win a distance race at the championships. She took the women’s 1,500 meters at 4:12.61.

The U.S. dominated the final day of competition, and wound up leading the medals table with a total of 15.
