Stars Want You To Go Meatless On Monday

Rick Bonino Food Editor

What do radio countdown king Casey Kasem, horror hostess Elvira (“Mistress of the Dark”) and Saturday Night Live’s Kevin Nealon have in common?

They’re co-chairs for “The Great American Meatout,” coming up Monday, when carnivores across the country are encouraged to trade their barbecued ribs for some celery ribs.

So what to do if you can’t imagine a meal without fish, fowl or a fellow mammal on your plate?

Registered dietitian Anita Crook will demonstrate how to make appetizing vegetarian meals in a program titled “Nutritious, Easy and Delicious … Meatless Isn’t Tasteless!” tonight at Holy Family Hospital’s Health Education Center.

The session starts at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per person. For reservations, call 482-2477.

March is not only Meatout month, and National Nutrition Month, and National Frozen Foods Month, it’s also National Peanut Month.

So here’s some handy cocktail party patter, courtesy of Hershey’s: “Peanut butter was invented in 1890 when a St. Louis physician convinced a food company to produce a ground peanut paste as a nutritious protein substitute for people with poor teeth who couldn’t chew meat.”

Looking for ways to keep kids busy in the kitchen?

The Jolly Time Pop Corn people offer a free brochure, “Pop Corn Recipes and Crafts For Kids Only,” featuring such goodies as Pop Corn Lollipops and Brown Bag Relief (which is what you’ll seek after too many Pop Corn Lollipops).

Send your name, address and Zip code along with 75 cents (or two proofs of purchase from any Jolly Time product) to: Jolly Time Pop Corn, Box 178, Dept. 95, Sioux City, Iowa 51102.

Then there’s “Breadtime Tales,” an educational video from King Arthur Flour that teaches children aged 3 to 11 how bread is baked, complete with a self-described “catchy theme song” that goes: “Bread, bread, bread, we’re going to make bread.”

The 30-minute tape sells for $14.95, plus postage and handling; call 1-800-827-6836.

And vice versa

Philip Marfuggi, vice president of Ferrara Food Co., after learning that the Vatican ordered 115 cases of the firm’s premium pasta, Cav. Giuseppe Cocco: “Every company hopes to find a celebrity endorsement for its products. This is the kind you pray for.”
