Students Put Pen To Posters To Help Prevent Poisonings

Alison Boggs Staff Writer

Several Spokane Valley students were among the winners of this year’s annual Poison Prevention Poster Contest.

The contest is sponsored by Deaconess Poison Prevention and Education Center and aims to educate children about poison. Thousands of Spokane-area students entered the competition.

Entries were judged by a panel of community members. Twenty-four winners were chosen, 12 of whom will have their posters displayed on billboards throughout the Spokane area in mid-March.

The other 12 children will receive gift certificates from Toys ‘R’ Us. The billboard displays help kick off National Poison Prevention Week, March 19-25.

Winners among Spokane Valley children are:

Billboard winners: Third-graders Ronae Peacock and Marc Ungaro from Adams Elementary, and Tacy Mitchell from Ponderosa Elementary; fourthgraders Ryan Heacock and Brittany Broyles from Sunrise Elementary, and Jacob Snizik from Trentwood Elementary; fifth-graders Michael Allen from University Elementary and Joshua Leyk from Sunrise.

Toys ‘R’ Us winners: Third-grader Anna Hawkins from University, and fifth-grader Kaleigh Knuth from Sunrise.

A taste of theater

Five Central Valley High School students participated in an innovative theater workshop at Eastern Washington University on Saturday.

Heather Jones, Jon Lutyens, Dmitri Arbakauscus, Matt Ahrens and Kristina Dauterman worked with students from around the area to prepare dramatic pieces which they performed for an audience at the end of the festival.

Festival coordinators Sue Goodrich and Josie Darst hope the students’ experience will lead to more theater activities.

EV kindergarten enrollment

The East Valley School District will be conducting enrollment and screening clinics for kindergartners at each of its five elementary schools in coming months.

Students who will be 5 by Aug. 31 will be able to enroll for kindergarten. Those who will be 4 by that date may be considered for the Early Childhood Education Assistance Program. Younger children may go through the screening clinic if parents have special areas of concern. Parents should call elementary schools to schedule appointments.

Parents will need to complete immunization records and have birth certificates for their children.

Screening activities will include speech and language, motor skill, hearing, vision, health and cognitive assessment. The information gathered will be shared with the parent at the end of the clinic and the child’s kindergarten teacher will receive a summary on each child.

Screening dates:

March 24 at Trent Elementary (924-2622);

April 21 at Trentwood Elementary (927-3215);

April 28 at Otis Orchards Elementary (924-9823);

May 19 at Skyview Elementary (927-3210);

June 2 at East Farms Elementary (226-3039).
