Deadline Extended For New Green Cards

Compiled From Wire Services

The government is giving immigrants with old-style green cards - showing status as a permanent resident - an extra year to obtain updated replacements.

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service said the deadline for replacement of the I-151 cards, issued before 1979, has been extended to March 20, 1996.

The agency had wanted to replace the old cards by next Monday with new cards that are harder to falsify. However, the agency was swamped by last-minute applications and decided to extend the deadline.
