Schrempf, Johnson Spark Sonics To 103-78 Laugher Seattle Wins Fourth Straight; Heat Shoot Icy 29 Percent
Detlef Schrempf scored 20 points and Ervin Johnson had a career-high 15 Thursday night as the Seattle SuperSonics held Miami to a season-low point total in a 103-78 victory over the Heat.
The Sonics won their fourth straight game and sent Miami to its fifth straight loss.
The Heat finished with a franchiselow 29 percent shooting (25 of 85). Their previous low was 31 percent on Nov. 16, 1990 against Indiana. Miami’s previous low point total this season came in a 103-83 loss to Orlando on Dec. 27.
Shawn Kemp had 12 points and 16 rebounds for the Sonics, who placed six players in double-figure scoring.
Kevin Gamble led the Heat with 16 points.
Johnson, the Sonics’ No. 1 draft pick in 1993, made his 11th start of the season. The 6-foot-11 center also sparked the team with seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
Sarunas Marciulionis scored eight straight points on a jumper and two 3-point baskets to give the Sonics an 89-62 lead with 8 minutes left.
The Sonics broke the game open in the third quarter, using a 15-2 spurt to extend a 52-46 lead to 67-48. Schrempf capped the spurt with two free throws with 3:20 left in the quarter.
Kemp scored five points in the run, including a two-handed dunk off his missed free throw, for a 65-48 lead with 4:21 left in the third quarter.
Sonics coach George Karl was ejected after getting whistled for two technical fouls.
