Lc Battles Kennewick To Tie

Despite a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal, Lake City settled for a 2-all tie with visiting Kennewick in boys non-league soccer Friday at Coeur d’Alene.

Lake City (0-0-1) led 2-0 after 24 minutes but couldn’t convert its chances in the second half. The Lions (0-1-1) tied the game for good at 53 minutes, when Matt Kessie controlled Jeff Blink’s hard crossing pass from 50 yards and scored from 5 yards out.

Will Scott scored the Timberwolves’ first goal, at 18 minutes, on a direct throwin from Ryan Murdoch. Six minutes later, the Lions misplayed a crossing pass in front of their goal and knocked in the ball for a 2-0 LC lead.

Kennewick scored at 27 minutes when Andy Turner reached the ball during a scramble off a corner kick.

Visiting Kamiakin (2-0) defeated CdA 4-0 in a non-league match.

The Braves limited CdA (0-1) to four shots on goal. Senior-dominated Kamiakin pressured the Vikings all day. CdA goalie Mike Drake, who hasn’t played soccer in eight years, had 13 saves.

Softball: Pitchers Holly Vanwert and Holly Turner combined for 16 strikeouts and held host CdA hitless during Mead’s 4-0 non-league fastpitch win.

Vanwert, the starter, struck out nine in four innings. Mead had just three hits.

College baseball: Senior outfielders Casey Olson and Carter Masterson had one run scored and one run batted in apiece as Gonzaga University edged Missouri 3-2 at the Pepsi-Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif.
