Santa Clara Comes Up Short, 75-67

Associated Press

West Regional

Mississippi State survived a 3-point shootout against pesky Santa Clara for a 75-67 victory Friday in the first round of the West Regional.

Making its third appearance in the tournament, Mississippi State had never advanced past the first round.

“Everybody was saying we can’t win in postseason, and in the past, we haven’t done it,” said T.J. Honore, whose 3-point shooting carried the Bulldogs. “We can’t get too high with this victory just because we won one game. This team has got a lot of basketball left.”

Mississippi State made nine 3-pointers, and the teams combined to attempt 41 3s. Steve Nash had four of Santa Clara’s six 3-pointers.

Santa Clara (21-7), which upset secondseeded Arizona in a first-round game two years ago, came close to pulling off another behind Nash, who scored 22 points before fouling out with 22.7 seconds left.
