State Of Mind Leader Takes Care Of Business

Joe Ehrbar Correspondent

State of Mind front-man Lincoln Kroll is one heck of an ambitious musician.

The leader of the progressive, mind rock band, which plays the Big Dipper tonight, hasn’t been waiting around for some big label to finance his band’s recording projects, promotional campaigns and tours.

Instead, Kroll has done it all himself - from forming his own independent label and building a studio to booking the band’s tours and hiring a friend to handle promotions and publicity.

It’s DIY (do-it-yourself) at its best.

Only now, after numerous lineup changes, does Kroll feel the 9-year-old State of Mind is finally coming into its own musically and may be on the verge of national recognition.

“I have a new band that’s phenomenal,” he said in a recent phone interview. “They’re tremendous musicians, really great people.”

The band is not the only thing that Kroll is fond of.

He’s also very proud of the work he and the band put forth on its forthcoming album, “I Am Myself.”

“The quality is a thousand times better,” said the singer, comparing the new recording to the band’s self-titled 1991 debut. “It’s got a live energy that’s right in your face.”

Tonight’s show begins at 8:30. Two of the opening bands will be The Menthols and Stem. Cover charge is $5.
