Teen Suspended After Marijuana Discovered In Locker

Emi Endo Staff writer

A small amount of marijuana was found Monday in a student’s locker at North Pines Junior High School.

A 13-year-old girl is expected to be charged with possession of a controlled substance, North Pines Principal Dave Bouge said. The girl, a seventh-grader, has been suspended for the rest of the semester, he said.

Another student told administrators that marijuana was being stored in a locker at the school.

A small amount of the drug was found in the locker, Bouge said, and the school notified deputies.

“The amount (of marijuana) was about the size of a dime,” Bouge said. “But that has no bearing on this. We will always have a zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol and weapons.”

The 13-year-old, who faces possible charges, had asked another girl to keep the marijuana in her locker, Bouge said. That student has been suspended for seven days, he said, but will probably not face charges.

“Our opinion, based on a thorough investigation, is that the other girl involved allowed her locker to be used,” Bouge said. “She was embarrassed or coerced into letting her locker be used.”

“There’s no such thing as a secret in junior high,” Bouge said. “They come and tell us when stuff is going on. They were mad, they were angry that this was in our school,” he said of other students. “I’m proud of them for that.”

Shots fired near library

Sheriff’s deputies are looking for a man who fired a shotgun at two other men near the Argonne Library early Saturday morning.

The incident began earlier on Spokane’s North Side, when occupants of a blue Dodge Daytona with gray racing stripes began harassing the people riding in two other cars.

At Euclid and Market, the Dodge cut off the other cars, sheriff’s Lt. Clyde Ries said. All three vehicles continued from Euclid and Market along Upriver Drive to the library on Argonne Road, where they stopped and several people got out.

A man who had gotten out of the Dodge was armed with a doublebarreled shotgun. He fired at one of the other men, who dove behind the wall for protection. He then reportedly pointed the gun at another man who had run across the street. That man said he heard something hit a nearby house.

The gunman then left the scene in the Dodge. He was described as white, about 30 years old, 5-feet-11 and 165 pounds. He was wearing a black leather jacket and blue jeans.

A resident of the neighborhood near the library called police to report shots being fired, Ries said.

No one was injured. No damage was done to the vehicles or the buildings. Deputies later found a shell casing at the library.

Man accused in assault of deputy

A Valley man who called 911 to report a broken window in his Jeep ended up being arrested by the deputy that he is accused of attempting to assault.

Levi T. Barker, 18, 16711 E. MacMahan, faces charges of attempted second degree assault and was cited for reckless driving.

At 9:11 p.m. Friday, Deputy Jay McNall was called to Pines and Grace, where he saw a Jeep ram an abandoned vehicle on top of a hill three times.

McNall parked his marked car on Grace and approached the hill on foot. The Jeep, which was going about 15 mph, shone its headlights directly on the deputy.

McNall then shone his flashlight at the driver and at himself to make his uniform visible.

The Jeep sped up and came right toward McNall, deputies said.

McNall, who was yelling at the driver to stop, stepped away. The vehicle missed him by about two feet.

As the vehicle passed by, McNall’s flashlight hit the side of the Jeep, breaking the driver’s window.

At 9:24 p.m., Barker called 911 to report that his Jeep window was broken, deputies said.

McNall went to the 11200 block of East Grace, recognized Barker as the Jeep’s driver and placed him under arrest. Barker told deputies he didn’t realize the person he encountered on the hill was a deputy and that he didn’t see the deputy’s car.
