WSU Edges Ucla, 4-3

Mike Kinkade drove home Ken Cameron in the 12th inning Friday as visiting Washington State University defeated UCLA 4-3 in a non-conference baseball game at Los Angeles.

Kyle Kawabata (3-1) won for the Cougars (5-10) by holding the Bruins (12-11) scoreless for the final seven innings. Bobby Kazmirski (0-2) took the loss, allowing one run in five innings.

Kinkade’s fourth-inning single scored Randy Kaleikilo for a 1-0 lead. Gar Vallone hit a two-run homer and Troy Glaus a solo shot for a 3-1 UCLA lead in the fifth.

Kinkade singled and scored on Ron Naumu’s double in the seventh. Rob Ryan walked and later scored on a forceout in the WSU eighth.

Outfielders Casey Olson and Carter Masterson had one run scored and one run batted in apiece as Gonzaga University edged Missouri 3-2 at the PepsiJohnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif.

Winning pitcher Troy Cleland (2-1) checked the Tigers on two hits through six innings. Jeff Birkland relieved in the seventh, ended a rally with two strikeouts, then survived a shaky eighth.

GU is 2-3 at the tournament and 8-8 overall. The Tigers are 1-4, 8-13.

Olson walked in the fifth and scored on Bryan Hunt’s two-out double. The Bulldogs’ Casey Jacobs tripled to lead off the sixth and Masterson followed with a double and scored on a two-out single.

Prep softball: Pitchers Holly Vanwert and Holly Turner combined for 16 strikeouts and held host CdA hitless in Mead’s 4-0 non-league fastpitch win.
