Georgia Fires Coach

Compiled From Wire Services

Hugh Durham, the only coach who has taken Georgia’s men’s basketball team to national postseason competition, was fired after 17 seasons.

“I don’t agree with the decision,” Durham said during a news conference immediately after one in which Vince Dooley, the athletic director, announced the firing. “I just don’t think it was justified.

Durham’s last team went 18-8 in the regular season, then lost its first game to Alabama in the Southeastern Conference tournament and was ousted in the opening round of the NIT.

Durham, 57, had a 298-216 record at Georgia, taking the team to the NCAA tournament five times. That included a Final Four appearance in 1983, a year after losing Dominique Wilkins - the best player he ever had.
