Grenade Explodes Inside Dance Hall

A grenade exploded inside a dance hall in a southern Philippine village, killing five people and wounding 32 others, a radio station reported today.

The report monitored here quoted police as saying the blast happened at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Nalapaan village in Pikit, North Cotabato, 580 miles southeast of Manila.

Residents celebrating the town festival were dancing inside a community hall when somebody lobbed a grenade inside, according to radio station DSMD.

All five who perished died at the scene. The injured were brought to a nearby hospital. The report gave no further details.

No arrests were immediately made and a motive was not clear.
