Massachusetts Roes Into Regional Semis

Massachusetts had a long list of contributors in its 75-53 victory over Stanford on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Coach John Calipari wants to make sure everyone knows only one name matters.

“I’ve said it over and over again and I’ll keep saying it. As Lou Roe goes, we go,” Calipari said of his senior forward. “He played great. He played above the rim, and as long as he’s above the rim, I’m happy with our chances.”

Roe had 16 points and eight rebounds as the second-seeded and seventh-ranked Minutemen (28-4) advanced to the regional semifinals for the second time in school history.

They will play Tulsa on Friday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

The only other time UMass advanced that far in the tournament was 1992 when Kentucky beat the Minutemen in the round of 16. Roe was a freshman then and since then, there have been two second-round losses, including last season’s crushing defeat to Maryland.

“I’m happy the second-round jinx is over,” Roe said. “With everybody healthy and feeling strong we’re ready for the next tournament.”

The Minutemen are looking at each weekend of the NCAA tournament as a tournament in itself and they ended the first one in impressive style, taking a 43-23 halftime lead over the 10th-seeded Cardinal (20-9) and cruising from there.

Tulsa 64, Old Dominion 52

Guards Shea Seals and Pooh Williamson combined for 50 points to lead the Golden Hurricane (24-7) past the Monarchs (21-12) and into the round of 16 for the second straight year.

Tulsa, which defeated Illinois in the first round with a second-half barrage of 3-pointers from Seals and Williamson, built an 11-point lead early in the second half against Old Dominion.

Seals finished with a season-high 31 points and outdueled Old Dominion forward Petey Sessoms, the hero of the Monarchs’ stunning triple-overtime win over Villanova on Friday.

Seals, a sophomore guard, was only 1-for-5 from 3-point range in the first half, but that didn’t stop him from shooting them after the break. His 3-pointer with 17:11 left gave Tulsa a 36-28 lead, and his second made it 41-30 with 14:42 remaining. In between, he added a slam for effect.

But the Monarchs wouldn’t give in, just as they refused to fold against heavily favored Villanova. And it was Sessoms, who had 35 points against the Wildcats, who led them back. His driving layup with 7:43 left pulled Old Dominion within 48-46.

But Williamson hit a crucial 3-pointer 26 seconds later and Seals nailed his fourth 3-pointer to make it 58-50.
