Sampras Eager To Win

Compiled From Wire Services

Pete Sampras, eager to watch the telecast of Michael Jordan’s return to the Chicago Bulls, hurried past Derrick Rostagno in the second round at the Lipton Championships.

Stefan Edberg and Richard Krajicek lost their opening matches, leaving only seven of the top 11 men’s seeds alive. Sampras, the tournament’s two-time defending champion, completed his 6-3, 6-2 victory over Rostagno before 1:15 p.m.

“It feels good,” the top-ranked Sampras said, “because now I’m going to go watch Michael Jordan play.”

On the women’s side, No. 4 seed Lindsay Davenport and No. 5 Gabriela Sabatini advanced to the fourth round, while No. 9 seed Mary Joe Fernandez withdrew because of influenza.
