Habitat For Humanity Plans Home Meetings

Ward Sanderson Correspondent

Low-income families searching for quality housing should take a look at Habitat for Humanity. The group is now accepting preapplications from interested families.

Informational meetings will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 2 W. Third Ave., on Friday at 1 and 7 p.m. A third meeting will be Saturday at 10 a.m., also at the church.

All who want to apply must attend one of these meetings to receive their final application. Preapplications can be obtained by calling Habitat’s Spokane offices at 534-2552.

The ecumenical Christian group builds homes with labor and materials donated by individuals, churches, companies and organizations. Habitat then sells the finished property at cost through a no-interest loan program.

The finished homes usually have a market value of about $60,000 to $80,000.

“We’ve built 28 houses during the seven years we’ve been in Spokane, and there are five more we’re working on right now,” says board member Carol Phillips.

Hurry, though, because the supply of homes is definitely limited.

“We probably get about three calls a day about housing,” Phillips says. “We will take 10 families in this time, but we might have about 100 applicants.”
