Pentagon Police Shoot Gunman

Defense Department police on Monday shot and critically wounded a man near the Pentagon who had opened fire on them, a department spokesman said.

Officers of the Defense Protective Service, which patrols the Pentagon, had tried to stop the man because he appeared to fit the description of a bank robbery suspect.

The man fired two shots at the officers and several officers returned fire, hitting the man. He was in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
