High Court Limits Agencies’ Appeals

Compiled From Wire Services

The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that federal agencies cannot bring appeals on behalf of people whose interests they represent unless explicitly granted the authority to do so by Congress.

The 9-to-0 decision rejected an argument by the Department of Labor that the public interest in ensuring adequate compensation for disabled maritime workers gave the department standing to bring appeals on behalf of injured workers who chose not to pursue their own cases.
