Schools Encouraging Voter Registration

From Staff And Wire Reports

Spring school elections are around the corner, and school district clerks are encouraging patrons to register to vote.

But residents no longer have to hurry to register because same-day registration applies to school districts as well as to county and state governments.

The governor has approved legislation extending same-day registration provisions to schools and municipalities.

“They have to have registrars at the polls,” said Kootenai County Clerk Tom Taggart.

Some school districts have already made arrangements to register people ahead of time. In Post Falls, school secretaries are authorized to register voters.

Post Falls has a two-year supplemental levy election on April 25. The $500,000-per-year levy is designed to pay for new buses, textbooks and maintenance.

All school districts face a May 16 election for school trustees. Potential trustees have until an April 14 deadline to announce their candidacy and turn in the paperwork necessary to run for office. Candidacy forms are available at school district offices.
