Agassi Roots For Sampras

Compiled From Wire Services

Tennis’ best rivalry took a twist when Andre Agassi led cheers for Pete Sampras.

Both won in three sets and advanced to Sunday’s Lipton Championships final.

Agassi earned his victory first, playing a flawless third-set tiebreaker to beat Magnus Larsson 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1).

Then, during an interview over the public address system, Agassi encouraged the spectators to stay and support Sampras, leading them in a chant of “Pete! Pete! Pete!”

Agassi got his wish a few hours later, when Sampras beat Jonas Bjorkman 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.

In today’s women’s final, Steffi Graf meets Kimmiko Date.
