Conner’s Crew Wins

Compiled From Wire Services

In desperate need of a win, Dennis Conner’s Stars & Stripes passed Mighty Mary with less than 1 mile to go for a spectacular finish in their America’s Cup semifinal race.

Stars & Stripes crossed the finish line 8 seconds ahead, or less than two boat lengths’ separation after 18.55 miles of sailing. The margin turned out to be moot, though, when Mighty Mary’s mostly female crew was disqualified for failing to perform a 270-degree penalty turn for an infraction during the crucial sequence.
