Nic Baseball Fades In Late Innings

A close call at the plate in the first game and a bad finish in the second game added up to a pair of losses for North Idaho College at the Warrior Invitational at Walla Walla on Saturday.

The host Warriors beat NIC 7-6 in the opener when Jose Rijo-Berger scored in the bottom of the eighth. The umpire made no call on the original play, then Rijo-Berger dove back, touched the plate and was ruled safe.

NIC and Edmonds CC were tied 2-2 in a later game, but Edmonds scored two in the seventh and four in the eighth for an 8-2 win.

College track and field

Jed Stannard of Washington State jumped 6 feet, 10i-3/4 inches to place third in the high jump at the Stanford Invitational at Palo Alto, Calif.

The Cougars’ Eric Anderson finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute, 49.87 seconds.

WSU’s Jody Page, with a mark of 14.42, finished sixth in the 110 hurdles.

At Arizona State’s Sun Devil Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., WSU’s Yashiva Edwards finished second and teammate Tamika Brown took third in the 200.

Edwards ran 24.85, Brown 25.28.

Other Cougars finishes were: Carrie Tacheira, fourth, 5,000, 17:34.86; Marilyn Moberly, fourth, 10,000, 40:00.59; Kirsten Koch, fifth, long jump, 18-7-3/4; Kristen Christopher, fifth, discus, 133-3; and Kim Hulse, sixth, shot put, 41-10.

Idaho boys soccer

Donovan Hodgson scored once and assisted on Ryan Baker’s goal as Riverside/Deer Park (2-1) defeated visiting Coeur d’Alene in a nonleague match.

Hodgson beat a Vikings defender for the match’s first goal at 61 minutes. Baker scored 9 minutes later.

Brett Fink stole the ball and beat a one-on-one defender for CdA’s score, at 75 minutes. The Vikings (1-3) had three players at an Olympic development camp and two others who were ineligible.

At Bonners Ferry, Kris Gravelle and Dicky Villeli scored twice apiece to lead the Badgers (1-1) to a 7-2 win over visiting Lewiston (0-2).

Pat Shell scored for Lewiston in the first minute, but the Badgers responded with Gravelle’s goals at 3 and 11 minutes. BF goalie Gavin Glindeman deflected two Lewiston penalty kicks.

Prep softball

Amy Maurer went 4 for 7 and had three RBIs on the day as Coeur d’Alene split two games at the Clarkston Invitational and finished in third place.

Kim Sigler (2-1) pitched the Vikings (3-3) to a 6-3 win over Mead, a team that no-hit CdA a week ago. The Vikings opened with a 7-4 loss to La Grande, Ore. Rogers won the tournament, while La Grande finished second.

At CdA, Kelly Nelson (2-0) pitched a two-hitter and Sharrie Holzer (1-0) pitched a four-hitter as Lake City swept Moscow 16-1, 16-3 in a non-league doubleheader.

Elsewhere, Brianne Badgett (3-0) pitched a pair of one-hitters as St. Maries swept visiting Potlatch 13-2, 21-1 in a non-league doubleheader.

The Lumberjacks (3-0) had 26 hits on the day. Sarah Shippy of St. Maries homered in the second game.

Prep baseball

Rusty Widman pitched six innings for a win in the opener, then hit his third homer of the year in the nightcap as Rosalia (4-0) swept visiting Lakeside 9-4, 22-1 in a nonleague doubleheader.

Greg Nereim, Tyson Blank and Bill Barton also homered for the Spartans during the second game. The Knights are 0-2.At Ritzville, Kris Boness pitched four innings when Ritzville no-hit Odessa, 15-1, during a five-inning nightcap of a Bi-County League doubleheader.

Girls track

During Valley Christian’s Icebreaker Invitational at Central Valley, Annie Goodson of Kootenai finished second in the girls high jump and sixth in the 200.

Also for the Warriors, Dan Usdrowski was third in the high hurdles and fourth in the low hurdles; Justin Derbyshire took third in the shot put and sixth in the discus; and Lindsey Kraack was runner-up in the 300 hurdles.

Washington boys soccer

Todd Hughes fed Chris Skidmore for the match’s lone goal as East Valley edged visiting Pullman 1-0 in Frontier League play.

The second-place Knights (2-0-1) missed an earlier penalty kick, but broke through for a score midway through the second half. Goalkeeper Erich Hannan had 13 saves for the Greyhounds (1-1-0).
