Wichita State Overtakes Cougars

Wichita State scored four times in the fourth inning Saturday to wipe out a Washington State lead and hand the Cougars a 9-2 college baseball loss at Rainbow Stadium in Honolulu.

Todd Belitz (1-2), who started for WSU (8-14), gave up eight hits and five runs in five innings. Starter Ben Thomas (2-0) picked up the win for the Shockers (8-4), throwing six innings of four-hit, two-run ball.

The Cougars collected both runs in the fourth inning while taking a 2-1 lead. Randy Kaleikilo started the inning with a double. After Ken Cameron stroked a run-scoring triple, Mike Kinkade followed with an RBI single.

The Cougars went hitless the rest of the way. The only WSU baserunners came on three walks, a hit batter and one error.

Wichita State took command in the fourth, scoring four times with the aid of four hits and one walk. The Shockers added two runs in the seventh on three consecutive hits, then ended the scoring in the eighth with two more runs.

In a late game Friday, Hawaii Pacific’s Chris Saringan scattered four hits in shutting down WSU 8-3.

Saringan (2-2) relieved Layne Goeas, who didn’t get an out in the first inning.

College track and field

Jed Stannard of WSU jumped 6 feet, 10 1/4 inches to place third in the high jump at the Stanford Invitational at Palo Alto, Calif.

The Cougars’ Eric Anderson finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute, 49.87 seconds.

WSU’s Jody Page, with a mark of 14.42, finished sixth in the 110 hurdles.

At Arizona State’s Sun Devil Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., WSU’s Yashiva Edwards finished second and teammate Tamika Brown took third in the women’s 200.

Edwards ran 24.85, Brown 25.28.

Other Cougars finishes were: Carrie Tacheira, fourth, 5,000, 17:34.86; Marilyn Moberly, fourth, 10,000, 40:00.59; Kirsten Koch, fifth, long jump, 18-7 3/4; Kristen Christopher, fifth, discus, 133-3; and Kim Hulse, sixth, shot put, 41-10.

College softball

Carrie Morris had four RBIs, including a bases-loaded triple, as Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Chaminade to salvage a doubleheader split in Honolulu.

CCS won the opener 11-9 when Morris had a sacrifice fly and Julie Fountain a fielder’s choice RBI during a two-run ninth.

Amy Orlando picked up the win and had a solo homer as Chaminade won the nightcap 2-1. Carla Coffield had an RBI triple for the Sasquatch.

College cross country

Jessica Fry of Spokane led the U.S. women to a fourth-place finish at the world championships in Durham, England.

Fry, a Rogers High grad who runs for the University of Alabama, finished in 14 minutes, 57 seconds. She finished 19th overall and first on the U.S. team in the junior women’s 4,500 meters.

Tim Briggs of Davenport, Wash., and Portland State led the U.S. men’s team to a ninth-place finish. Briggs ran a 26:08, 35th overall and first on his team in the junior men’s 8,450 meters.

Boys soccer

Todd Hughes fed Chris Skidmore for the match’s lone goal as East Valley edged visiting Pullman 1-0 in Frontier League play.

The second-place Knights (2-0-1) missed an earlier penalty kick, but broke through for a score midway through the second half. Goalkeeper Erich Hannan had 13 saves for the Greyhounds (1-1-0).

At Colville, Kanyon Anderson scored four second-half goals, all within 22 minutes, as first-place Cheney (3-0) beat the Indians 6-2.

Levi Luhn assisted on two of Anderson’s goals. The teams were scoreless for 46 minutes. Louis Pardini and Keith Goodwin scored for Colville (0-3).

At Clarkston, Lenny Peterson had four goals and two assists, and Loren Gravos added two goals and one assist as visiting West Valley (1-1-1) defeated the Bantams 8-0.

The Eagles outshot Clarkston 36-1. Matt Anderson had 19 saves for Clarkston (0-2-0).

Prep baseball

At Ritzville, Kris Boness pitched four innings when Ritzville no-hit Odessa, 15-1, during a five-inning nightcap of a Bi-County League doubleheader.
