James Houtchens Spokane

Memorial service for James C. Houtchens, 69, is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Houtchens, a 41-year Spokane resident, died Thursday. He was born in Wenatchee.

He was a teacher for Spokane School District for 35 years and retired in 1986. He also was a Navy veteran.

He was a member of Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church, North Hill Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies, El Katif Shrine, the Eagles and the Spokane Rifle Club.

Mr. Houtchens is survived by his wife, Betty Houtchens, and one sister, Marjorie Kafer Smith of Everett, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church or Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Eugene White Spokane

Graveside service for Eugene White, 76, will be at 3 p.m. today at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.

Mr. White, who died Thursday, was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

He moved to Spokane in 1968 and worked for ARCO as a truck driver and had 1 million safe miles. He retired in 1975.

He had served in the Army during World War II and was a pilot and had a private airstrip, Mullen Field.

He is survived by one daughter, Shirlee Roma; one son, Marvin White, both of Spokane; two stepdaughters, Nancy Birch of Anchorage, Alaska, and Mardi Kelly of Pasadena, Texas; longtime companion, Margaret Creer of Spokane and two grandchildren.

Eldon Miller Spokane

Service for Eldon E. Miller, 78, is planned for 4 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Miller, who was born in Hedgesville, Mont., died Thursday. He graduated from North Central High School and served Army/Air Corps in World War II. He was a member of the Machinist’s Union and was a self-employed machinist.

His wife, Lillian, died in 1989. He is survived by three sons, Bruce and Gene Miller of Spokane, and Ron Miller of Murrysville, Pa.; one sister, Esther Strick of Spokane; six grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Larry Brown Spokane

Graveside service for Larry James Brown, 39, will be at 2 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.

Mr. Brown, who was born in Chicago, died Thursday. He moved to Spokane in 1974 and graduated from Gonzaga University. He worked for Lanier and most recently was with Pathology Associates as sales manger.

He volunteered with the Spokane AIDS Network.

He is survived by his partner, Duane Scott; one daughter, Amanda Brown; one son, Brandon Brown, both of Missoula; Mr. Scott’s daughter, Vanetta Tucker of Payette, Idaho; his mother, Hazel Brown of Olympia; two brothers, Art Brown of Olympia, and Don Sittler of Vancouver, Wash.

Edith Calvin Spokane

Service for Edith Irene Calvin, 71, will be at 2 p.m. today at Thornhill Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Calvin, who was born in Crestline, Kan., died Wednesday.

She had lived in Spokane for 45 years and had been a waitress. She belonged to Community Radio Watch CB Club.

Survivors include her husband of nine years, Dennis; three stepsons, Allen and Ron Tilton, both of Otis Orchards, and Rick Calvin of Greenacres; two stepdaughters, Debbie Foss of Veradale, and Diana Joynes of Bothell, Wash.; six brothers, Bill and Everett Gust, both of Greenacres, Bob Gust of Veradale, Dwayne and Frank Gust, both of Wallace, Idaho, and Robert Gust of Coeur d’Alene; two sisters, Doris Casey of Butte, Mont., and Lena Vaughn of Greenacres; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Laura King Spokane

Funeral Mass for Laura M. “Babe” King, 85, is set for 10 a.m. today at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. HennesseySmith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. King, who died Tuesday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

Her husband, Thomas King, preceded her in death. Survivors include one sister-in-law, Ruth Helpingstine of Spokane.

Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
