Spring Has Sprung

Lynn Gibson Correspondent

Spring break is the first week of April for most Inland Northwest school districts. Whether you’re staying at home or traveling, here are ideas for family enjoyment.

For those going to Hawaii (or just dreaming of it): “Huff and Puff’s Hawaiian Rainbow” (Warren Publishing, $5.95 paperback) is a new read-aloud story by Jean Warren, for ages 2-6, that will delight children with the beauty of the tropics.

Huff and Puff, two adventurous clouds, whisk themselves to the Hawaiian islands to enjoy whales, palm trees and glorious rainbows. Kids will also enjoy 16 pages of songs and activities with a Hawaiian theme. To order, call (800) 773-7240.

Closer to home

The Spokane Art School will offer art and nature workshops April 3-7 for children of all ages, highlighting themes such as local folklore, regional wildlife and environmental preservation.

Ages 4-6 will enjoy Artstart classes, designed for little nature-lovers. For older grades there’s a wide range of classes, including “Clay Techniques,” “Beading” and “Photographing from Nature.” For further information on classes or to register, call (509) 328-0900.

Make an Easter basket

The Corbin Art Center, sponsored by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department, is offering a one-day workshop on April 8 from 9-11 a.m., where children ages 6-13 create Easter baskets. The cost is $9.

April 8 also begins a six-week Creative Dramatics course for ages 3 through grade 8, divided into various age groups. Instructor Sandra Seaton will encourage children to release their imaginations and build observation and sensory skills. The cost is $18; call the Corbin Art Center for specific class times.

Pre-registration is required for both classes; call (509) 625-6200.

Where the buffalo roam

For families visiting the National Bison Range in Montana, consider Todd Wilkinson’s book, “Bison For Kids” (NorthWord Press, $6.95) with award-winning photography by Michael H. Francis.

Families will enjoy this beautiful paperback with up-close photos and a story of the bison’s life and history. To order, call (715) 356-9800.

Marriage boost

Add more romance, excitement and depth to your relationship at a Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend April 7-9 in Spokane. It’s open to couples of all faiths. Accommodations are provided.

For information, call Dan and Judy Leach at (509) 484-5683 or (800) 795-LOVE. xxxx
