Tarver Produces Record Win

As far as Antonio Tarver was concerned, he won his boxing gold medal five days ago by beating Cuba’s Diosvany Vega. He made it official by stopping Thompson Garcia of Ecuador in the second round, and in the process gave the United States its 169th gold medal of the Pan Am Games, a record.

The gold medal total, which surpassed the record 168 set by the United States in 1987 at Indianapolis, was the final mark by the U.S. team, which also topped previous marks for silver, bronze and total medals.

The other medals won by Americans on were a team silver in women’s triathlon with Smyers combined with Gail Laurence Garcia of Denver; Sherrie Phillips (Colorado Springs, Colo.) with a silver in the 45 kilo judo class; and Jake Flores (Temecula, Calif.) with a bronze in the men’s 56 kilo division.
