Former Nhl Stars Headed To Town

It could be the final hockey event in the Coliseum and it includes some of the greatest names in the history of the game.

If everyone who is advertised shows up for Monday night’s Oldtimers Hockey Challenge it’ll be an allstar event.

The lineup includes six-time National Hockey League all-star Guy LaFleur, three-time NHL scoring champion Bobby Hull and Maurice “Rocket” Richard.

The 7 p.m. exhibition is part of a 45-stop tour of cities in Canada and the Northwest.

“They’re promoting it as a family fun-type night,” said Don Scherza, one of the local organizers. “It’s not going to be just strictly competitive hockey. They’re going to have some figure skaters and skits between periods, and the referee will wear a microphone and talk to the crowd during the game.

“It should be a lot of fun.”

The ex-NHL stars will play a team of former Spokane senior players, many of whom helped bring four Allan Cup championships to town. The list includes goalie Dave Cox, defensemen Dwight Carruthers, George Talotti and Jeff Fenton, and forwards Ken Gustafson, Gail Holden, Gordie Turlik, Charlie Goodwin, Tom Rendall and Scherza.

Scherza also said former Spokane Chiefs coach, and an ex-NHL player, Bryan Maxwell, is being recruited to play for the Spokane oldsters.

“He said he would,” Scherza said, “we just have to confirm it.”

Tickets at $12 for adults and $6 for children are available at G&B Select-A-Seat outlets.

Golf

Mark Rohde had his putter working to near-perfection as he put together a 3-under-par 69 (34-35) to win the first Washington Trust Bank Pro-Am of the season at the tough Clarkston Country Club on Monday.

Rohde, the Valley View pro, made some big putts for six birdies, offsetting some of it with three bogies. But he also made par out of the water on No. 6 as he bested Coeur d’Alene Resort pro Mike DeLong (33-3770).

Les Barton of The Fairways was low amateur with a 72. Net amateur honors went to Kirk Danekas of Ritzville, 0-8 handicap, 70; and Jerry Camp Jr., Qualchan, 9-13, and three in the 14-and-up group, all with 67s.
