West Central Neighborhoods To Discuss Youth Violence

From Staff And Wire Reports

The West Central and Emerson Garfield neighborhoods will host a meeting Thursday night to discuss the rising incidence of youth violence.

The meeting will be held at the West Central Community Center, 1603 N. Belt, from 7 to 9 p.m.

“We’re trying to address youth violence in our neighborhoods,’ said Angie Courton, administrative coordinator at the West Central Community Center. “It’s not just to get the emotional impact, it’s to develop an action plan.”

Representatives from the Spokane Police Department, the Juvenile Justice Department, Holmes Elementary School, Spokane County Superior Court and the West Central Community Center will speak. Discussion will be encouraged.

Some of the problems that led to the meeting include violence in schools and vandalism.

Neighborhood activists, C.O.P.S. West representatives, neighborhood school principals, the West Central Community Center and police officers helped plan the event.
