Eustachy Pact Unclear

Utah State University officials said basketball coach Larry Eustachy’s new annual salary is $104,000, but they decline to provide additional details of the contract.

USU president George Emert would not release a copy of the actual contract, noting that state laws protect some information for privacy reasons. A Utah open records attorney contends those details should be made public.

The salary figure was the only contract detail released by the university despite a request from The Herald Journal newspaper for Eustachy’s entire contract. Eustachy formerly coached at Idaho.

Tubby Smith, 43, who coached Tulsa to the NCAA Sweet 16 the past two seasons, was hired as the first black basketball head coach at Georgia.

Steve Alford, the sharpshooting guard who led Indiana to the 1987 NCAA basketball title, will be named coach at Southwest Missouri today, according to a published report.<
