Dollar Mixed In Light Dealing

The dollar finished mixed against other key currencies in thin dealings Monday amid pessimism about the U.S.-Japan auto trade talks and further signs of a slowing economy.

The dollar fell against the Japanese yen and rose slightly vs. the German mark. The currency traded in narrow ranges and volume was light due to holidays in Japan and Europe.

Late in New York trading, the dollar was quoted at 83.50 yen, down from 84.20 late Friday, and at 1.3905 marks, up from 1.3869.

The U.S. currency’s decline against the yen was largely the result of trader pessimism that Washington and Tokyo will reach an agreement to boost exports of American autos and auto parts to Japan.
