Sanctions Stay In Place

Associated Press

NCAA penalties that drastically reduced football scholarships for two seasons at Mississippi will remain in place despite an appeal.

An NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee report made public Tuesday said the sanctions imposed last November were warranted “given the seriousness of the violations” and similarities to a 1986 case involving Ole Miss.

The school appealed the reduction in scholarships from 25 to 13 for the 1995-96 and 1996-97 academic years and in expense-paid campus visits by recruits from 56 to 40 during the 1994-95 and 1995-96 academic years. The appeals committee’s decision is final.

In the wake of the NCAA investigation, longtime athletic director Warner Alford resigned last July 11.
