As A Pop Icon, Madonna Is Just A ‘Bedtime Story’

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

Madonna (remember her?) has had her string of Billboard Top 40 hits snapped.

Until her latest release, “Bedtime Story,” the pop diva had watched 32 consecutive of her singles make the Top 40 list. That’s a lot of songs with a lot of memorable names: “Material Girl,” “Like a Virgin,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” “Like a Prayer,” “Who’s That Girl,” “Borderline.”

But “Bedtime Story” topped at out No. 42 last week. This week it dropped to No. 54.

What is the reaction from the Madonna camp? Well, they says, it ain’t her fault that her fans just don’t get it.

“Frankly,” said Madonna spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg, “the video is extremely sophisticated and may be a bit difficult for her core fans to absorb.”

Loose talk

Sandra Bullock on her appeal (in Mademoiselle magazine): “I’m not what the industry has deemed a ‘hot tamale.’ If people see me as competent first, that’s more of a compliment than saying ‘she’s really cute.’ Every once in a while, though, I have to admit, I would like to be the person that the guy sees across the room and wants to take care of.”

From the Polo Grounds to Candlestick Park, say Hey!

Willie Mays turns 64 today.

In other words, the boy is OK, so sod off

When a McCartney breaks his leg in England, it makes news. Even when the McCartney in question is not an ex-Beatle, Paul McCartney, but his 17-year-old son. James McCartney broke his ankle on Wednesday in a car accident near his father’s farm 50 miles southwest of London. “There are many other kids in this country who have suffered much worse injuries in accidents,” McCartney said Thursday in a statement.

So that’s why Ross’ monkey is (was?) named Marcel

Attention “Friends” fans: Lisa Kudrow, better known as Phoebe, is getting married. Her intended is French ad executive Michel Stern. By the way, if you think that Kudrow, 31, resembles her charmingly dense character, note that she earned a bachelor’s in biology from Vassar.

They’re already calling it ‘Fishtar’

Kevin Reynolds, out as director of “Waterworld” because of “creative differences” with producer/star Kevin Costner, is steamed over his treatment. In the June issue of US magazine, he said Costner is “making up imaginary enemies” and that “his worst enemy right now is himself.” The film is due July 28. Stay tuned.

And the winner of the Oscar for Best Actress is…

Julie Lynn Cialini, 24, is stretching herself. Once a model for “The Price Is Right,” Cialini now reigns as the Playboy Playmate of the Year. And she’s just finished an HBO movie. Her role? “I wear a bikini and play a bartender,” she said.

And that was like the one Junior hit against Detroit
