M’S For Massacred, As In 10-0 Davis Homers, Singles As Angels Shell Seattle

Associated Press

Chili Davis homered, singled twice and drove in four runs Friday night, and five California Angels pitchers shut out the Seattle Mariners 10-0.

Seattle came into Anaheim Stadium with a 6-1 record, the best in the majors and the best start for the franchise.

Davis, who agreed to a three-year, $11.4 million deal with the Angels on Thursday, hit his first homer of the season off Dave Fleming (1-1) with two men on base during a six-run fifth inning.

“Now that all that other stuff is over, I can just go out and play,” Davis said. “That’s how I got where I am.”

J.T. Snow doubled home two runs and drove in another with a sacrifice fly, and Jim Edmonds drove in a pair of runs with a single and sacrifice fly.

Bob Patterson (1-0) earned the win after replacing starter Brian Anderson in the fifth inning. Anderson left with a strained left biceps after throwing three pitches in the inning and 53 in the game.

The Mariners, who grounded into four double plays, trailed 2-0 after three. They threatened in the fifth with three singles off Patterson and loaded the bases with two outs, but Joey Cora hit a fly that left fielder Tony Phillips caught on the run toward the foul line.

Mitch Williams pitched the ninth, giving up a hit and a walk.

The Angels blew open the game with six runs in their half of the inning.

Fleming was 5-0 in five career starts at Anaheim Stadium before being shelled for seven runs, six earned, on five hits over 4 2/3 innings.

“I don’t know why he did so well against us in the past,” Davis said. “But he made a couple of mistakes and we got to him. He didn’t have the control he used to have.”
