Cheney Tops Colville, Wv To Earn Berth In Regional

Doug Clark had two-run doubles in both games and pitched a complete-game six-hitter in the opener Saturday as Cheney eliminated Colville and West Valley in Frontier League baseball playoffs at WV.

Cheney (12-5) advanced to a bestof-three playoff with league champion East Valley (11-4), starting Tuesday at EV. The winner moves on to regionals.

Cheney, seeded third in the playoffs, opened with a 10-1 win over fourth-seeded Colville (7-9). Cheney’s T.J. Albin had a two-run homer in the first inning and Clark had his two-run double during a five-run fourth.

Jim Noble was 3 for 3 for the Indians.

Clark and winning pitcher Tucker Urdahl had two-run doubles during a five-run sixth to vault the Blackhawks past second-seeded WV 8-2.

Cheney’s Bryan Miller had a tworun double in the first. The Eagles (11-5) stayed close on Andy Imada’s RBI single in the bottom of the first.

Frontier boys soccer

Jesse Nelson had a crucial save in a shootout and Ty Redinger scored the winner as Riverside/Deer Park, the lone team to mar Cheney’s perfect record, stunned the host Blackhawks 4-3 in a loser-out District 7-AA playoff match.

Fourth-seeded Riverside/Deer Park (7-4-2) meets East Valley (8-3-2) at 5 p.m. Tuesday at EV for a berth in the State AA Tournament. EV blanked West Valley 1-0, also at Cheney.

R/DP tied Cheney (11-1-1) earlier in the year. Cheney had allowed but one goal in league play, but R/DP’s Ryan Baker scored twice in the first 56 minutes to give the visitors a 3-1 lead. Seth McKay scored R/DP’s other goal, on Donovan Hodgson’s second assist.

The Blackhawks rebounded at the end as Mike Kisslinger, who had set up Trevor Harelson’s late first-half goal, fed Kanyon Anderson at 68 minutes. With time running down, Harelson scored again, on an Anderson assist.

Neither team scored through two overtimes. R/DP took a 2-1 lead in the ensuing shootout, but Cheney forced a 5-5 tie. During suddendeath, both teams missed their first one-on-one try. Nelson’s save and Redinger’s goal ended the marathon.

In the other match, Chris Skidmore fed Clint Burgess for the lone goal as second-seeded EV eliminated third-seeded WV.

The goal came after 62 scoreless minutes. Rob Atwood made nine saves for EV, which owned a 17-11 shots-on-goal edge. Tony Lazanis had eight saves and Ryan Kuntz six for the Eagles (7-5-1).

Frontier softball

Tarrah Brown (3-3) won twice and drove in a pair of runs in both games as fourth-place Colville (4-5) swept visiting Clarkston 13-1, 6-3.

In the opener, Heather Brown was 4 for 4 and Christy Yarroll 3 for 3 to support Brown, who stuck out six. Brown pitched a three-hitter and struck out 10 in the second game.

The fifth-place Bantams are 2-9.
