Next week, several thousand of you filling the streets of downtown Spokane this morning will replace your running shoes with high-tops.

Organizers of Hoopfest ‘95, set for June 24-25, expect 14,000 participants on 3,500 teams to take to the blacktop. That could make Hoopfest the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the United States. Many times that number of spectators will be watching and cheering their teams on.

Now in its sixth year, Hoopfest has contributed more than $200,000 to Special Olympics and various youth and sportsrelated organizations in the Spokane area. Early team applications are due today for guaranteed entry, but applications will be taken until May 28 or the maximum number of teams have entered. Call 624-2414 for more information.

Funds for the arts

Assistant’s, Inc., a group of Spokane women dedicated to the development of education and the arts, has announced the recipients of proceeds from various fundraisers held throughout the year.

Receiving funds are Cheney Cowles Museum, Women’s & Children’s Restaurant, Women’s Drop-In Center, Holy Names Music Center, YWCA Child Care Center, Gonzaga University Music Department, The Cathedral and the Arts, Connoisseur Concerts, Interplayers, Spokane Art School, and the Greater Spokane Music and Arts Festival.

Recently elected to lead Assistant’s, Inc., next year year are: Susan Nunes, president; Jane Reed, vice president; Cheryl Novan, secretary; Carolyn Reed, corresponding secretary; and Tekla Ellingsen, treasurer. Bert Miller is the outgoing president.

Listen up

The 24-voice Whitworth College Chamber Singers will perform a spring concert this afternoon at 4 in the music recital hall on the Whitworth campus. The concert is free and open to the public. Directed by Randi Von Ellefson, professor of music at Whitworth, the singers are selected from the 85-voice college choir.

DAR meeting, plant sale

Spokane Garry Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, will hold its regular meeting Tuesday at Liberty Park United Methodist Church. Hostesses for the meeting will be Isabelle Moe, Barbara Brown, and Leota King.

The program will be presented by Roberta Peacock. Membership certificates for 25 years of service will be presented to Kathryn Ebey and Joann Schwenk. Awards for 40 years of service will be given to Mildred Carpenter and Mabel Baldwin. A plant sale will follow the meeting. For information, call 466-0581.

YMCA happenings

The YWCA transition school is having a birthday party - and you’re invited. The school, which provides activities and education for homeless children, turns five this month. The public is invited to an open house Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Comstock Room, 829 W. Broadway.

The YWCA pottery department will serve a traditional English high tea in conjunction with a pottery sale and exhibition of antique and hand-crafted teapots. The event happens May 19. Tea will be served from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Comstock Room. The price is $7 per person in advance, $8 at the door. Admission is free to the pottery sale and teapot show. Fashion show

Goodwill Industries’ 12th annual fashion show, brunch and sale will be Saturday in the Ridpath ballroom from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Fashion show garments and others will be available for purchase immediately following. Tickets are $17.50 and are available by calling 838-4246, extension 420.

Lilac luncheon

May 17 is the deadline for reservations for the annual Lilac Festival royalty luncheon, May 19 at the Ridpath Hotel. The luncheon is sponsored by Darigold. Bonnie Algar serves as event chair. Laura Ashley will be mistress of ceremonies with entertainment provided by 1986 Lilac Queen Monica Palmlund Watson and Tracy Holland, Hayden Lake.

Children’s Miracle Network telethon

Spokane’s four acute-care hospitals and others have joined to benefit the health needs of children through the Children’s Miracle Network.

Pediatric programs and services at Deaconess Medical Center, Holy Family Hospital, Sacred Heart Medical Center and Valley Hospital and Medical Center; as well as the Regional Center for Child Abuse and Neglect and St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute, will all benefit.

The goal of this year’s telethon is $425,000, all of which is kept in the local area. Scheduled for June 3 and 4, the telethon will be aired on KHQ-TV.

Pedal for prizes and MS, too

The ninth annual Multiple Sclerosis TriState Bike Tour is set for June 10 and 11. The funds raised on this tour help the 1,800 people and their families affected with MS in our area.

A $25 registration fee and a minimum of $150 in sponsored pledges is required. Prizes will be awarded for fund-raising. The fully supported tour includes all meals, rest stops and an overnight stay in Sandpoint.
