Martinez Cruises

Compiled From Wire Services

Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez put on a powerful display of clay-court tennis to overwhelm Martina Hingis, the 14-year-old prodigy, 6-1, 6-0 and win the Citizen Cup.

Hingis was overcome by stage fright in her first professional final and produced a series of unforced errors that made Martinez’s job easier.

The Spaniard, ranked fourth in the world and seeded second, won in 49 minutes to collect $79,000.
