Hayden Lake School Tops In Recycling

From Staff And Wire Reports

The students at Hayden Lake Elementary School collected more aluminum cans, newspaper and magazines during the month of April than any other school in Kootenai County.

For their efforts in the monthlong contest, the Kootenai County Solid Waste Department awarded the school $500, a 20-inch television and a videocassette recorder.

All told, students in Kootenai County collected 100 tons of recyclable materials during April.

Hayden Lake Elementary students collected about 80 pounds per student.

Canyon Elementary School collected 62.5 pounds per student, earning them second place. Third place went to Dalton Elementary, whose students collected more than 33 pounds each.

Ponderosa Elementary and Athol Elementary came in fourth and fifth, respectively. Hayden Meadows Elementary earned an honorable mention.

Winners and business sponsors of the program will be honored in a 2 p.m. ceremony Friday at the Kootenai County Courthouse.
