Many Dogs In Lima To Be Poisoned

Compiled From Wire Services

Officials on Monday began poisoning the first of thousands of stray dogs in Lima, and an animal protection group protested the move as inhumane and a possible health threat.

Health Ministry workers hope to poison 90,000 stray dogs - about one out of every 10 dogs in Lima - with liver laced with strychnine. Officials say the large numbers of strays in the capital pose a rabies threat.

Rosario Quintanilla, president of Friends of Animals in Peru, condemned the poisoning, saying the dogs suffer needlessly before dying.
