Chiefs Captain Called Up By St. Louis

Kevin Sawyer, an undrafted 20-year-old with an uncertain future when the hockey season started, was called up Monday by the National Hockey League St. Louis Blues.

Sawyer, left wing and captain of the Spokane Chiefs until their season ended last month, played two games with Peoria in the International League playoffs before being summoned by St. Louis.

Sawyer signed with the Blues in February after establishing himself as a team leader despite playing much of the year bothered by pulled groin muscles.

“He’s kind of on a taxi squad,”

Chiefs coach Mike Babcock said. “It’s great for him just to be there.”
