Calmer Phillies Return To Glory

Associated Press

National League

Macho Row no more, the Philadelphia Phillies are a mellower bunch than the chest-thumping, muscle-flexing throwbacks who won the last National League pennant.

Still, flashes of the spirit and style of that magical 1993 team are on display with this year’s Phillies, who have used a sevengame win streak to grab first place in the N.L. East.

“We’re not as loud,” second baseman Mickey Morandini said. “People aren’t calling us the dirty, grungy type of people, but we still come out here and play hard. That hasn’t changed. There’s a lot of chemistry on this team right now.”

The Phillies are off to the kind of hot start that allowed them to take the early lead in the N.L. East in 1993.

They are showing the same penchant for the come-from-behind victory that team did, rallying twice on the road from four-run deficits.

That shouldn’t be surprising, according to catcher Darren Daulton, who said the Phils walk to the cocksure strut of their manager, Jim Fregosi.

“Everything starts at the top, and you have the trickle effect on down of how you want people to act and respond,” Daulton said.

Pirates sale nearer

The owners of the Pittsburgh Pirates received a new proposal that the city believes will eliminate the barriers blocking the sale of the team to cable TV franchise owner John J. Rigas.

There was no immediate word of when the Pirates’ board of directors would consider the proposal.
