Weekend Is Full Of Fund Raisers And Other Musical Events
OK, so it’s too late for the lobster dinner. But there’s still plenty going on at Eastern Washington University’s Killin Weekend Fundraiser to entertain the pre-fed.
Killin Weekend is named to honor Orland Killin, an Eastern professor who dedicated 30-odd years to the university. Money raised goes to fund academic and athletic scholarships.
I won’t talk about Saturday’s lobster dinner and dance (except to say it sounds like fun), since reservations for this event were needed by Monday. If you missed out, you can keep your wallet $40 fatter and go to two preview scrimmages for free.
The Red-White Spring Football scrimmage is at 2 p.m. Saturday at Woodward Stadium in Cheney. You’ll find the Lady Eagle Volleyball Scrimmage at 3:30 p.m. Saturday on the Physical Educational Building court.
Round ‘em up
St. John Vianney School is holding its eighth annual Western Jamboree Dinner/Auction at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Red Lion Inn.
For $25 a person you’ll feast on a Western-style buffet of ribs, smoked turkey, baked beans and more. Highend items on the auction block include a 1993 Jeep Wrangler with low miles, a Polaris jet ski with trailer, two hot tubs and several vacations.
Unique to this auction are the many autographed items from celebrities and sports stars that were gathered through a letter-writing campaign by the students at St. John’s.
Some of the most notable are a signed script from the cast of “NYPD Blue” that includes David Caruso’s signature. There’s also a signed photo from Michael Jordan that features the basketball great in his baseball, er, glory.

Miscellaneous music
Tadeusz Majewski, a PolishAmerican pianist now living in Minneapolis, will give a classical piano recital at the Panida Theater in Sandpoint at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Her program will include the works of Beethoven (“Appassionata” Sonata), Chopin (F minor Ballade and others), Scarlatti and Rameau.
Tickets are $7, $6 for seniors and $3 for students. They’re available at the door or at Sandpoint businesses Eve’s Leaves and Java Adagio.
Bet you never knew there was any, but at 4 p.m. Sunday, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes is presenting a concert of music for organ and trumpet.
James Barrett, organist, and Christopher Cook, trumpeter, will feature music from the 17th century through the 20th century. This is the eighth concert in a series of inaugural concerts marking the restoration and expansion of the organs in the cathedral.
There is no admission charge, but a free-will offering will be taken.
The Silver Spurs, an international folk dance group of local teenagers, is holding its annual spring show Saturday at 7 p.m. at The Met. The 45 performers will premiere a Macedonian wedding suite, as well as dances from Hawaii, Hungary and America.
Tickets are $2.50 for children and seniors and $4 for adults. There is a $10 family ticket, as well.
The EWU Mallet Madness Concert is 2 p.m. Sunday and all moms are admitted free in honor of Mother’s Day.
The EWU Percussion Ensemble will perform along with the B&B Percussion Duo. Several outstanding high school percussionists will also perform.
The concert is at EWU’s Music Building Recital Hall. Cost is $5 for general admission and $3 for seniors and non-EWU students. Eastern students, and moms, get in free.

Spokane’s Lilac Week festivities begin with the Past Presidents of Associated Garden Clubs’ annual Luncheon and Style Show, held in the Empire Ballroom of the Ridpath at 1 p.m. Monday. Reservations are $11; call 328-7823.
Opera Buffs of Spokane, sponsored by Spokane Symphony Associates, presents the Ensemble of the Spokane Area Children’s Chorus at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Rockwood Retirement Community Center. The event is free.
Pauline Haas, professor of art emerita from Whitworth College, will present a slide lecture in the Cheney Cowles Museum auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
It’s free and open to the public.
xxxx Getting out Saturday there’s an open house featuring traveling birds at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge will celebrate International Migratory Bird Day with an open house, 1 to 4 p.m. The event includes programs on migratory birds, guided tours and demonstrations on how to build nesting boxes. A one-hour bluebird presentation begins at 1:15 p.m. It’s all free; the Refuge is six miles south of Cheney off the Cheney-Plaza Highway.
