Babbitt Will Pay Fines For Campaign

Compiled From Wire Services

Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt has agreed to pay a $21,000 penalty to settle charges he accepted excessive contributions during his unsuccessful 1988 presidential campaign.

The Federal Election Commission announced the agreement Friday, ending a matter that was discovered when Babbitt’s campaign was audited several years ago.

The commission concluded that Babbitt’s campaign accepted two dozen donations that exceeded the maximum $1,000 limit set by federal law.
